My favorite medium to work with was watercolors, first, because i had never worked with watercolors, so it was awesome doing something new. I liked watercolors the most because of the very colorful paints that i could create. Watercolors are very special because its all about layering and you can create very detail shade with all the layering needed for creating a piece. In this piece i enjoyed creating a landscape that was sort of mystical and using watercolors to make it even more mysterious with all the funky purples and pinks. If i could, i would probably do all my pieces in watercolor because i enjoy working with them so much but i realize some other styles are better for certain pieces. The only thing i dislike about watercolors is how it smears and limits you from getting fine brush strokes sometimes but i think this was mostly just beginners error and a more talented artist would know how to work around this problem. Overall i like watercolors a lot because they are so funky it color and the vividness creating from the smearing but it all flows and looks super cool at the end.
Since i have been doing art in high school, i have done many art mini lessons in class to help me become a better artist. I feel like the most important mini lessons were perspective and creating values in my pieces. In art i had a pieces that showed both of these in a piece. I had VW buses in a line going down the beach and each one got darker as it went farther away from the foreground into the background. The value was in the bottoms and tops of the buses to show the dark. When i put it in perspective i had to show them getting smaller as they were disappearing into the distance and bigger as they were closer. I felt the perspective instructions we have had has helped in every piece we have ever done in art and this would be the most important lessons because it sets the piece up for success. The value mini lessons was very important because it finished the piece and it would make or break the success of the piece.
Over the semester i have done many projects, but i believe this pieces show the most growth, they might not be my best pieces but they show growth by more detail and values being used. The first piece is a prisma color picture that has to show reflection, i decided to choose a picture of a cars side mirror reflecting a landscape in the background so i chose this one. In this piece i felt if i could get the perspective in the mirror of the back of the car and water, then the piece would look better from the start. This helped me in many of my pieces because i would try to set it up the best i could because i knew it would turn out way better. In the next photo i chose a VW bus from my trip to Jerome Arizona, and i had use oil paint, which is totally new to me ,but i felt if i could set it up good, it would turn out good. In this photo it was all about trying to get the values right in the windows and underneath the bus.
Since it was my first time using oil paints, i felt that i did a pretty good job, i found out i had to layer the paint and blend it. In the prisma, which i had never done before, i had to blend the prisma' s which was totally different for me because i wasn't used to colored pencils blending so nicely. I feel that since this was the first time for me using this materials that i used my other skills more to help me to finish this piece nicely. Overall i like these pieces because they look a lot better compared to my others and show that i have a little more skill than it looks in others. Out of all my projects this semester in art 3, i believe my least successful project was my acrylic reflection painting. This was my least successful project this semester because it did not show reflection and didn't look like the original photo. At the end of this painting i just wanted to get it over with because i didn't like the way it looked. The hardest part for me was trying to draw and paint the circular wheel in perspective, and then getting the reflection in perspective also with the car in the reflection. If i could do this piece over i would change my topic, something that would be easier for me to draw and paint but also have the reflection. The reflection didn't look good on this piece because my values were totally off and the perspective didn't work together without having good values. I liked the idea at first but if i had known how hard it was going to turn out for me i would have defiantly changed the subject but that's part of learning so after this piece i decided to try and pick pieces easier for me to do. Overall i did not like this piece because of my failed attempts at trying to make it look good.
After looking through my projects from this semester, i believe the fat meerakat clay sculpture was my most successful project. This project was the most successful because it was easier for me to make art with my hands compared to a pencil or brush but i think it covers all aspects needed to be covered. In this project, the goal of the project was to come up with a animal and make it fat, and then we had to created it out of clay. I chose an animal that is usually skinny so that it would make the fat look epic on the meerakat, and i kept adding fat to the stomach and sides. I kept the the legs and arms in normal size and also the head, then i made a huge stomach and even fat rolls at the bottom of the stomach. After the body was done i had to add textures so i did little cuts all over the body and extremities, this was the game changer because it made everything come together. At the end after it had been fired in the kiln, i painted it up with many layers or paint. The most beneficial piece of the design was keep everything but the stomach normal in size because it emphasized the fat so much more. Overall i think this one came out looking the best compared to my others.
